Signature: "Spiro T. Agnew", 5x3 index card. In 1962, Republican
attorney Spiro Theodore Agnew (1918-1996), born Spiro Anagnostopoulos, was
elected as County Executive of Baltimore County, Maryland, his first public
office. An outsider in a predominantly Democratic county, in 1966,
Democrats selected an opponent of integration as their candidate for the
state's Governor and Agnew won the governorship.Sworn in as Governor
of Maryland in January 1967, Agnew, who became noted for his backing of
tax and judicial reforms, resigned on January 7, 1969, having been elected as
Richard M. Nixon's Vice President. Reelected to the vice presidency in 1972,
Agnew resigned on October 10, 1973 in the face of charges that he had
accepted $29,500 in bribes while Governor of Maryland (and allegedly
continued to receive bribes while Vice President) and falsified federal tax
returns. Agnew, who pleaded nolo contendere to the income tax charge in federal
court, was sentenced to three years probation and fined $10,000. Disbarred in
Maryland, he became an international trade executive after leaving office.
