A 7¼x9¼colored bust photo of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, that is mounted to an
11x13¾ sheet of cardstock. It is signed to Jilly Rizzo, a longtime friend and aide to Frank
Sinatra, on the mount.
Inscribed photograph mount signed "To Jilly - whose good humor makes/Palm Springs even
sunnier/Sprio T Agnew". Color, 7¼x9¼ photo, mounted to an 11x13¾ sheet of cardstock. In
1962, attorney Agnew (1918-1996, born Spiro Anagnostopoulos in Baltimore, Maryland),
was elected as County Executive of Baltimore County, Maryland, his first public office. The
Republican Agnew was an outsider in a predominantly Democratic county. In 1966,
Democrats selected an opponent of integration as their candidate for the state's Governor, and
Agnew won the governorship.Sworn in as Governor of Maryland in January 1967, Agnew,
who became noted for his backing of tax and judicial reforms, resigned on Jan. 7, 1969,
after being elected as Richard M. Nixon's Vice President. Reelected to the vice presidency in
1972, he resigned on Oct. 10, 1973 after being charged with accepting $29,500 in bribes
while Governor of Maryland, bribes that allegedly continued while he was Vice President,
and falsifying federal tax returns. Agnew, who pleaded nolo contendere to the income tax
charge in federal court, was sentenced to three years probation and fined $10,000.
Disbarred in Maryland, he became an international trade executive after leaving office. Then in
1981, Agnew was ordered by a Maryland judge to pay $247,735 to the state to compensate
for bribes and kickbacks received while Governor of Maryland and Vice President from public
works contracts. Lightly toned and bowed. Photo is separating from mount. Mount has
lightly creased and worn corners and random ink stains. Otherwise in fine condition.
