The Vice President thanks former aide for birthday wishes.
Typed Letter Signed: "STA" as Vice President, 1p, 7x9. The Vice President, Washington, 1971 November 11. To Ernie (Minor), his former Assistant. In full: "It's a comfort to know that you haven't changed a bit. Thoughtful, generous -- and pleasantly crazy. It was good to hear from you again, and I appreciate your remembering my birthday." Spiro T. Agnew (1918-1996) was born in Baltimore on November 9, 1918 and was celebrating his 53rd birthday. Vice President Agnew came under investigation by the U.S. attorney in Baltimore for allegedly receiving payoffs from engineers seeking contracts when Agnew was Baltimore County Executive and Governor of Maryland. Agnew asserted his innocence, but he resigned on October 10, 1973 and pleaded nolo contendere, or no contest, to a single charge that he had failed to report $29,500 of income received in 1967. He was fined $10,000 and placed on three years probation. Fine condition.
