The composer's signature on three bars of music from his operetta Babette
Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "Sincerely/Yours/Victor Herbert/Nov 14 05", 4x2½ affixed to 4½x3 cardboard. Three bars of music penned by Herbert, identified by him as being "from 'Babette'". Penciled notes on verso (unknown hand) indicate that Herbert's operetta Babette premiered in Washington, D.C. on November 9, 1903. It opened at New York's Broadway Theatre, Broadway at 41st Street, on November 16, 1903, running for 59 performances. The theatre was built in 1880, converted to a film and vaudeville house in 1908 and razed in 1929. Irish-born and German-raised, Victor Herbert (1859-1924) was a composer, cellist, and conductor. Works of the composer include Babes in Toyland and Naughty Marietta. From 1893-1898, he conducted the 22nd New York Regiment Band and then conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony (1898-1904). In 1904, Herbert organized his own orchestra in New York. Herbert also wrote musical scores for the Ziegfeld Follies (1917, 1921-1924). Slightly soiled, not at signature. Slightly toned. Corners slightly worn. Edges of backing card irregular. Otherwise, fine condition.
