Victor Herbert, Louis Schmidt Jr., Henry P. Schmitt and Franz P. Kaltenborn pen a note on a bar of music on an album leaf
Four Autograph Musical Quotations signed: "Cello/Yours truly/Victor Herbert", "1st Violin/Kindest regards of/Louis Schmidt Jr.", 2nd Violin/Yours sincerely/Henry P. Schmitt", and "Viola/Franz P. Kaltenborn", 6¾x8. Captioned in unknown hand in the center: "The/Schmidt-Herbert Quartet/1892." Each musician has penned a note on a bar of music, written the instrument he plays in the quartet, and signed his name. 27-year-old Irish-born Victor Herbert had come to the United States in 1886. The year he signed this sheet he became conductor of the 22nd New York Regiment Band, a position he held until 1898 when he became the conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony (1898-1904). After 1904, Herbert organized and conducted his own orchestra. Herbert's works include Babes in Toyland (1903) and Naughty Marietta (1910). Toned. Small stain near upper right corner. Left edge torn from book. Otherwise, fine condition.
