VICTOR KILIAN
Rare handwritten note by the blacklisted character actor, the victim in two bizarre incidents
Autograph Note signed: "To Mr. R. Becker/Best Wishes/Sincerely/Victor Kilian", 6½x4½ album leaf. Character actor Victor Kilian (1891-1979) played supporting roles in several films of the late 1930s and the 1940s, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Boys Town, The Mask of Zorro and Sergeant York, often playing a villain. It will never be said that Kilian had luck on his side. In 1942, while filming Reap the Wild Wind, he lost an eye in a staged fight scene with John Wayne. In the 1950s, he was blacklisted by Hollywood. He continued stage acting, and returned to TV in the 1970s, playing Grandpa Larkin, "the Fernwood Flasher," on the sitcom Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. In 1979, Kilian and another veteran character actor, Charles Wagenheim, appeared in the All in the Family episode "The Return of Stephanie's Father." Between the filming and the airing of this show, Wagenheim and Kilian were both beaten to death in separate robberies. Binding holes at left edge. Lightly creased with folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
