VICTOR SEN YUNG
Extremely rare signature on an autograph letter (1971) to a radio station interviewer in Cleveland, mentioning his role as "Hop Sing" on Bonanza
Autograph Letter signed: "Victor Sen Yung/'Hop Sing'/on/Bonanza", 1 page, 8½x11. Universal City, California, 1971 September 6. On personal letterhead to Bob West, WERE Radio, Cleveland, Ohio. In full: "May I thank you for the wonderful reception and enjoyable chats we had in your studio when I was in Cleveland a short time ago. Your questions were most stimulating and I hope my answers didn't come out like so much 'Chop Suey'. For 'Chung King' and myself may I again say 'Thank you so much'. Sincerely". Victor Sen Yung (1915-1980) played Charlie Chan's son Jimmy in 11 films (1938-1942) and as a different son in two more after the war. In the US Air Force during World War II, he was in the cast of the successful morale-building play Winged Victory, which toured the country. He may be best remembered, however, as Hop Sing, the Cartwright family's cook on Bonanza (1959-1973). Capitalizing on this role, Yung authored The Great Wok Cookbook (1974). This ALS suggests that he was also a spokesman for Chung King, maker of canned Chinese foods. A wounded victim in an airline hijacking (1972), he died of carbon monoxide poisoning while making pottery in his own home. Normal mailing folds, light creases and toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
