Typed Letter signed: “Victor V. Veysey” in blue ink, 1p, 8x10½. No place, 1974 January 24. On official congressional letterhead. Addressed to “Director/ Office of Congressional Affairs/ Department of Health, Education, and Welfare/ Washington, D.C. 20201”. Written to "Dear SirIn full:The Riverside Unified School District has submitted its proposal for 1974-75 for funds under the Emergency School Aid Act. This expanded proposal provides for the addition of a bilingual/multicultural component, and, if fully funded, the program would provide employment for 170 people./ I would like to urge that this School District's new proposal receive favorable consideration./ Sincerely yours". Victor Versey (1915-2001) was a California congressman who represented both 38th and the 43rd Districts in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1936, he finished a degree at CalTech before earning his MBA from Harvard in 1938 and then going on to complete graduate work at Stanford. Versey then worked as a professor at both CalTech and Stanford from 1938 to 1946. He began serving as a member of the Brawley School Board and shortly thereafter commenced his career in politics, eventually serving two terms in congress from 1971 to 1975. Following the conclusion of his congressional career, Veysey worked as Assistant Secretary for Civil Works for the U.S. Army and subsequently was California's Secretary for Industrial Relations in 1983. Staple holes at upper left-hand corner. Toned. Two horizontal mailing folds. Red pencil notes (including underlining of letter contents) in an unknown hand. Scuffing toward upper right-hand corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
