VILHJALMUR STEFANSSON
Vilhjalmur Stefansson writes a letter of thanks and encouragement.
Autograph Letter Signed: "V. Stefansson", 1p, 8½x11. New York, 1937
January 20. To Mrs. Kolbe. In full: "You are as kind as your
husband, whose letter came by an earlier mail today and was answered then. I
feel the Dada is among the poorest of several bad pieces in the book. So
I hope you persist and find some that are better. As Philadelphians (for a
reason which will appear), you may find a special interest in Olof
Krarer." OLOF KRARER was an Icelandic woman who immigrated to
America in 1876 and became a very successful Eskimo imposter and a highly
respected authority on Eskimo culture, giving lectures at major American
universities. Born on the Isle of Man, STEFANSSON lived among the Eskimo
(1906-1907), learning their language and culture. He carried out
ethnographical and zoological studies among the Mackenzie and Copper
Eskimo (1908-1912). From 1913-1918 Stefansson, known for his lengthy
expeditions on which he subsisted largely on local resources, was in command of
an expedition to explore Canadian and Alaskan regions of the Arctic. His
polar artifacts are now housed in the Stefansson Collection at Dartmouth
College, where he served as a curator in his later years. Lightly creased. Minor
stains. Folds touch signature. Overall, fine condition.
