VILHJALMUR STEFANSSON
Vilhjalmur Stefansson writes a letter of regret that he will not be able to attend a tribute due to a prior commitment.
ALS: "V. Stefansson", 1p, 8½x11. On his New York stationery but written from Topeka, Kansas, 1928 November 10. To Percy C. Madeira, Chairman, Wilderness Club, Philadelphia. In part: "I regret inability to accept your kind invitation of October 30 (which has just caught up to me) to join you in paying tribute on December 15 to my old friend Roy Chapman Andrews...on the date in question I shall be engaged in giving a series of lectures at the State University of Iowa." VILHJALMUR STEFANSSON (1879-1962) was a Canadian explorer born of Icelandic parents. He explored the Canadian Arctic and lived among the Inuits (Eskimos) for many years (1906-1907, 1908-1912, 1913-1918). Naturalist and explorer ROY CHAPMAN ANDREWS spent his career on the staff of the American Museum of Natural History (1906-1942; Director, 1935-1942). He led numerous expeditions, most notably five to central Asia (1922-1930), and became famous for his team's discovery in 1928 of 100-million-year-old dinosaur eggs in the Gobi desert, the first ever found. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the last "n" and horizontal fold touches the upper loops of the "St" of Stefansson. Fine condition.
