VIlhjalmur Stefansson writes back that he will be keeping two trade cards and he
already has the books that are offered.
Typed Letter Signed: "V. Stefansson", 1p, 8¼x11. New York, 1933 April 19. On his
personal letterhead to Paul W. Kieser. In full: "I have decided to keep two of the trade
cards and, according to the price you give in your letter of February 20, I enclose check
for $1.00. The other cards are returned herewith. Sorry to have been so long about
making up my mind. The books you list on April 13 are all in my library. They are the
common Arctic books which nearly every second hand dealer has. However I am
enormously grateful for your kindness in keeping my wants in mind and hope you will
continue to let me know when you run across books that are in my field." Vilhjalmur
Stefansson (1879-1962), the Arctic explorer and scientist who spent a total of ten winters
and seven summers exploring Canada's northern regions. Stefansson, referred to as the
"Prophet of the North", covered a distance of nearly 20,000 miles in his travels on foot
and by dogsled, living among and adopting the clothing and habits of the native Inuit
people. Stefansson, who became a lecturer at Dartmouth in the 1930s and 1940s, did much to
change the image of the Arctic through his lectures and writings, portraying the region
as friendly and hospitable. Folds do not touch signature. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
