VILHJALMUR STEFANSSON
The Arctic explorer apologizes for tardily declining a speaking request.
Typed Letter signed: "V. Stefansson", 1 page, 8x10½. Summer Address/Dearing Farm, Bethel, Vermont, 1948 November8. To Mr. Vern Steele, Triangle Club, Gloversville, New York. In full: "I am ashamed. When your letter of October 11 arrived I knew I could not possibly accept your invitation for a talk at Gloversville but I meant to write you at once to thank you for the invitation. Now as we are packing up to leave for New York your [handwritten: unanswered ] letter stares me accusingly in the face. I am guilty and sorry." Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962) was an Arctic explorer and scientist who spent a total of ten winters and seven summers exploring Canada's northern regions. Stefansson, referred to as the "Prophet of the North", covered a distance of nearly 20,000 miles in his travels on foot and by dogsled, living among and adopting the clothing and habits of the native Inuit people. Stefansson, who became a lecturer at Dartmouth in the 1930s and 1940s, did much to change the image of the Arctic through his lectures and writings, portraying the region as friendly and hospitable. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased in lower margin. Pencil note (in unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
