VILHJALMUR STEFANSSON
Explored the Canadian and Alaskan regions of the Arctic.
Typed Quotation signed: "Vilhjalmur Stefansson/Signed December 29,
1943", 5¼x3½. From I Believe, written by Stefansson in 1938. In
part: "My hope for the good life of the future, as I have seen it
mirrored from the past by the Stone Age of northern America, does not rest
wholly on a belief in cycles of history...Perhaps we could live as happily in a
metropolis as in a fishing village, if only we could substitute the ideals of
co-operation for those of competition...." Born on the Isle of Man,
Stefansson lived among the Eskimo (1906-1907), learning their language
and culture. He carried out ethnographical and zoological studies
among the Mackenzie and Copper Eskimo (1908-1912). From 1913-1918
Stefansson, known for his lengthy expeditions on which he subsisted largely on
local resources, was in command of an expedition to explore Canadian and
Alaskan regions of the Arctic. His polar artifacts are now housed in the
Stefansson Collection at Dartmouth College, where he served as a curator in his
later years. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Fine
condition.
