Autograph letter signed: "Vincent Starrett" in black ink. 6½x9. Chicago, February 8, 1938. Written to the "Big Ten", in full: "Dear Sirs- Herewith my check for $100, for which send me- if still available- your first edition of Ruggles of Red Gap (Wilson) as per [illegible] Feb 4th issue. Truly". Vincent Starrett (1886-1974) was an American writer and newspaperman. He began his career with the Chicago Inter-Ocean in 1905 and later began working for the Chicago Daily News as a crime reporter, a feature writer and finally a war correspondent in Mexico from 1914 to 1915. Starrett turned to writing mystery and supernatural fiction for the pulp magazines during the 1920s and 1930s. He also wrote poetry, detective novels, and detective short stories primarily about Chicago sleuth Jimmie Lavender, many of which first appeared in the pulp magazine Short Stories. Toned. Corners rounded. Edges irregular. Vertical and horizontal folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
