VINNY "PAZMANIAN DEVIL, VINNY PAZ" PAZIENZA
Shown battling Roberto Duran in one of their two fights, signed as
Vinny Paz
Photograph signed: "Vinny Paz". Color, 10x8. Shown in the ring
with Roberto Duran. Vinny Pazienza (b. 1962), who bears the nickname
of "Pazmanian Devil", changed his last name to Paz in the 1990s. He won the
IBF's lightweight championship in 1987, and then began a series of
challenges in heavier weight categories. He made the largest leap ever in
championship weights (24 pounds) when he gained the WBA's junior middleweight
title in 1991, regaining his title fighting in a neck brace against doctors'
advice! He waged tough fights against top contenders in the super
middleweight class in the 1990s. Pazienza kept his promise to retire after 50
victories. He won a unanimous 10-round decision over Tucker Pudwill in 2004,
and then retired with a record of 50-10 (30 wins by knockout). Paz won both
of his fights against Roberto Duran, 12-round decisions in Las Vegas and
Atlantic City (1994-1995), but Duran was one of the few fighters to knock Vinny
down. Duran was in the front row at Foxwoods Resort in 2003, cheering Paz on to
his 50th victory. Fine condition.
