Fragment of her handwritten letter, bearing her signature and closing sentiment
Autograph Fragment signed: "escaped the snow storm here. Yours sincerely, Violet Stair", 4½x1½. Violet Dalrymple, née Harford (1883-1968)married soldier and parliamentarian John James Dalrymple in 1904. When he inherited the title of 12th Earl of Stair in 1920, she became Countess Stair. The couple had six children, including the future 13th Earl. The Countess had full charge of the children during World War I, when her husband was a German POW. There are four glass negatives of Countess Stair in the National Portrait Gallery, dated 1920. Lightly creased. Light adhesive residue on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
