VIOLET VANBRUGH-BOURCHIER
Vanbrugh sends a fan a souvenir "as a remembrance"
Autograph letter signed "Violet Vanbrugh Bourchier" 1 page, 4 ½ x 6 ¾
on stationery engraved "49, Hallam Street,/W. 1./Telephone:/Langham 3897." In
full:"Tuesday,/Dear David/Have you got one of these?/If not, would you
like to have/ this one - as a remembrance?/Yours very sincerely/Violet Vanbrugh
Bourchier". We don't know who David was or what Vanbrugh sent him "as a
remembrance". What we do know is that 49 Hallam Street is in Westminster off
Portland Place. Tenants that have used this address in recent years include,
among other things, an orthodontist, a rugby club and an LA Fitness club.
Vanbrugh (1867-1942) was an English stage and movie actress. She was the older
sister of actress Irene Vanbrugh and married English actor Arthur Bourchier, who
died 15 years before her. Bourchier and Vanbrugh took leading parts at London's
Garrick Theatre under his direction. The appeared in silent adaptations of
Henry VIII (1911) and Macbeth (1913), as well as four talkie-era movies.
The Nov. 12, 1942 New York Times reported at her death that she was
"The Greatest Shakespearean Actress of Country". Lightly toned. Adhesive
residue on back, which hasn't discolored the paper. Small fold on left side.
Page has been folded in three and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
