A short-haired Vanbrugh strikes a pose in a publicity photo as Ronda in The Double Mystery
Mounted publicity photo signed "Violet Vanbrugh" and, under caption "Violet Vanbrugh as 'Ronda'", "in/The Double Mystery". B/w sepia toned, 3 ½ x 5 ½ photo mounted on 4¼x7 album page. Vanbrugh (1867-1942) was an English stage and movie actress. She was the older sister of actress Irene Vanbrugh and married English actor Arthur Bourchier, who died 15 years before her. Bourchier and Vanbrugh took leading parts at London's Garrick Theatre under his direction. The appeared in silent adaptations of Henry VIII (1911) and Macbeth (1913), as well as four talkie-era movies. The Nov. 12, 1942 New York Times reported at her death that she was "The Greatest Shakespearean Actress of Country". Lightly toned with lightly spotted photo and album page. Photo is lightly creased and rounded at edges. Vanbrugh's name is faint but legible. Top of album page is neatly torn. Otherwise in fine condition.
