VIOLETTA ELVIN
3½x5½ image, Shown on stage in a graceful ballet pose
Photograph signed: "Violetta Elvin". B/w, 3½x5½. Violetta Elvin, born Violetta Prokhorova in Moscow in 1925, became a soloist with the Bolshoi in 1944. The following year, she married English architect Harold Elvin, and was allowed to leave for the West. In 1946 she joined the Sadler Wells ballet, soon regarded as one of Britain's foremost ballerinas. In 1956, a year after writing this letter, she left the stage, and England, moving to Italy with a lover. She returned briefly to dance as manager of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples (1985). On November 3, 2012, she celebrated her 87th birthday. Slightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
