VIOLETTA ELVIN
The prima ballerina writes from London, the year before she left the stage at age 30
Typed Letter signed: "Violetta Elvin", 1 page, 5½x7. Royal Opera House, London, 1955 March 15. On personal letterhead to Brian Knight, in full: "Thank you very much for writing to me and of course I am happy to send you the photographs you requested. [Items not included.] You must not be too worried about your drawing. I too sometimes practice at drawing figures and landscapes although I had no training. I usually shudder at the results but have great fun while I do. Important thing if one does not aim at becoming a professional painter. All my best wishes to you. Yours cordially". Violetta Elvin, born Violetta Prokhorova in Moscow in 1925, became a soloist with the Bolshoi in 1944. The following year, she married English architect Harold Elvin, and was allowed to leave for the West. In 1946 she joined the Sadler Wells ballet, soon regarded as one of Britain's foremost ballerinas. In 1956, a year after writing this letter, she left the stage, and England, moving to Italy with a lover. She returned briefly to dance as manager of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples (1985). On November 3, 2012, she celebrated her 87th birthday. Normal mailing fold. Fine condition.
