Typed Note Signed: “Dear Mr. Jones/ Yours Sincerely/ Blakenham”. 1p, 5¾x8¼. Note dated September 27, 1976. Written on his personal letterhead to “Mr. Norman Jones/ Leicester” Note reads, in full: “Thank you for your letter of 1st/ September. I am returning the card you/ sent me duly signed.” John Hare (1911-1982), known by his title: the 1st Viscount Blakenham, was a British Conservative politician. After receiving his education from Eton, Hare became an Alderman of London Country Council, serving between 1937 and 1952. He fought in Italy during World War II, receiving both an OBE and the Legion of Honour for his service.Hare came to hold an impressive number of prestigious political appointments; he was and Secretary of State for War (1956-1958), Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1958-1960), Minister of Labour (1960-1963), Chairman of the Conservative Party (1963-1965). In 1963, he became a member of the Peerage and was given the title of Viscount Blakenham, after which he served both as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords (1963-1964). Hare took a great interest in horticulture, and his ever-expanding garden became the Blakenham Woodland Garden, which eventually became open to the public. Creasing at corners and edges.
