card. In 1933, the Italian matinee idol appeared in four feature films:
Das Lied der Sonne, La Segretaria per Tutti, Un Cattivo
Soggetto (Bad Subject) and Passa L'Amore (Love Passes
By). He had made his debut in "talkies" the previous year. Italian
actor, director, producer and screenwriter Vittorio de Sica (1902-1974) was
nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his role as
Major Alessandro Rinaldi in A Farewell to Arms (1957). By that time, he
had received special Oscars for two of his films, Shoeshine (1946)
and The Bicycle Thief (1948), before the Best Foreign Language film
category was introduced. De Sica, who had made his acting debut in
silents while he was still in his teens, joined a stage company in 1923, and
he was a matinee idol in the Italian theatre by the late 1920s. De Sica
would repeat his success in films, starring opposite such Italian sex
goddesses as Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren. After making his
directorial debut in 1940, de Sica became the pivotal figure in the
neorealist movement. Lightly creased and worn at blank corners. Fine
condition.
