Vivien Leigh types a letter to a friend saying thanks for the letter about Dina Merrill.
Typed Letter signed: "Fond love/Vivien/Monday Dina called to/[illegible] Sunday", 1p, 7¼x10½. No place, 1959 March 31. To Mr. L. Arnold Weissberger. Begins: "Dearest Arnold:" In full: "Thank you so much for your letter about Dina Merrill. I have telephoned her, but so far I have had no reply. As I leave here next Friday, I'm afraid there is little chance of seeing her, which is a pity, as I liked her very much when we last met. I shall be staying with the Dietz for a few days from Monday, the 14th, and shall call you and naturally am longing to see you all." Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) won Academy Awards for Best Actress as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind (1939) and as Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Clark Gable was the obvious choice for Rhett Butler but, even after the filming of Gone With the Wind had begun, no one had been signed to play the part of Scarlett O'Hara. Leigh came to America in November 1938. On December 21st, she had a screen test for the Scarlett O'Hara role and on December 25, 1938 she was told by producer George Cukor that she had secured the part. On January 26, 1939, she began filming Gone With The Wind. Leigh, who was married to British actor Laurence Olivier from 1940 until their divorce in 1960, was only 53 when she succumbed to a severe bout of tuberculosis in 1967. File holes at upper margin. Date stamp at upper middle. Fold creases not at signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
