In full: "Thank you very much for your lovely Christmas card. How nice of you to think of sending me one. I hope you had a happy Christmas and send you my best wishes for the New Year". Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) signed this note during the early years of her marriage (1940-1960) to Sir Laurence Olivier and after achieving international stardom as the fiery, vivacious Scarlett O'Hara in David O. Selznick's production of Gone With The Wind (1939). Born on November 4 in India, she was a British subject and began her film career in England (1934). Leigh met Olivier on the set of the British film Fire Over England in 1937, where their romance began; he accompanied her to Gone With The Wind's premier in Atlanta, Georgia in December 1939. As a frail beauty, a strenuous acting career took its toll on her health and she appeared in only 21 films; still, she twice achieved American film's highest accolade - the Academy Award for Best Actress - as Scarlett O'Hara and as Blanche du Bois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Other memorable performances to her credit include Gentlemen's Agreement (1935), the title role in Anna Karenina (1948) and her last film Ship of Fools (1965). Lightly creased. Fine condition.
