W. B. FERRAND
Handwritten sentiment by the Tory M. P. called "the workingman's friend"
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yrs very truly/W. B. Ferrand/Hamden Grange [?]/Sept. 23.
1844", 4½x2¼, affixed to 5x3. William Busfeild Ferrand (1809-1889), a Tory Member of
Parliament (1841-1847, 1863-1865) was styled "the Workingman's Friend" due to the
attention he paid the welfare of the working class. He waged a 17-year battle in Parliament -
ultimately successful - to limit the workday to 10 hours, and was known as a staunch foe of
corruption. Toned and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
