W. C. FIELDS. Partly Printed Check signed: "W. C. Fields", 6½x2¾. New York, N.Y., 1938 December 13. Drawn on the Fifth Avenue Office of Guarantee Trust Company of New York, payable to Mabel Roach for $100. Endorsed: "Mabel Roach" on verso. Red-nosed, gravel-voiced, bottle-hitting American comedian W.C. Fields (1880-1946) began his film career in silents. The vaudeville veteran appeared in every version of the Ziegfeld Follies from 1915 to 1921. He later excelled in such films as David Copperfield (as Micawber), My Little Chickadee (with Mae West) and The Bank Dick. Two months after signing this check, on February 17, 1939, Fields' circus comedy, You Can't Cheat an Honest Man, costarring his radio adversaries Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, premiered in New York City. Bank cancellation holes touch name of payee, but not signature. Previously authenticated by PSA/DNA.
