W. C. FIELDS and CARLOTTA MONTI
Comprises:
1. Autograph Letter signed: "Bill", 1 page, 8¾x10¾. On personal letterhead of W.C. Fields. Van Nuys, California, 1936 April 7. To Mabel Smeyne, Hollywood, California. In full: "I received both your letters. I wanted to write you at length, giving you some advice and explaining why I couldn't help you, but it is all too futile. I already have too many encumbrances to take on any more. You will have to explain your case to your rich relatives. I naturally feel sorry for you. Carlotta joins me in love." Slightly creased. Horizontal and vertical folds. ½-inch vertical tear at upper right. With original typed envelope postmarked Los Angeles, California, on same date. Overall, fine condition. 2. Photograph signed: "Carlotta Monti". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 4½x6¼ (one surface). Fine condition. W.C. FIELDS (1880-1946), a red-nosed, gravel-voiced, bottle-hitting American comedian began his career in silents, later excelling in such films as David Copperfield (as Micawber), My Little Chickadee (with Mae West) and The Bank Dick. The vaudeville veteran, who appeared in every version of the "Ziegfeld Follies" from 1915 to 1921, made his last film Sensations of 1945, in 1944. Carlotta MONTI (1907-1993) appeared in a dozen films between 1929 and 1950, including Night Cargo (1936) and with W.C. Fields in Never Give a Sucker an Even Break (1941). She lived with Fields for fourteen years and published a "tell all" memoir, W.C. Fields and Me (1971). Two items.
