[W. C. FIELDS]
Telegram congratulating Hollywood columnist Jimmy Starr on his marriage, sent belatedly due to Fields' illness
Telegram, unsigned, 8x6½, sent by W. C. Fields. Van Nuys, California, n. d. To Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Starr/ c/o Evening Herald. In full: "Dear Jimmy and Julie my sincere congratulations on your union. May you be happy always. I am sorry I have been too ill to send you a telegram of congratulations sooner. A good old fashioned hug to you both. Your sincere friend and well wisher. Bill Fields". Red-nosed, gravel-voiced, bottle-hitting American comedian W.C. Fields (1880-1946), born William Claude Dukenfield, began his film career in silents. He later excelled in such films as David Copperfield (as Micawber), My Little Chickadee (with Mae West) and The Bank Dick. The vaudeville veteran, who appeared in every version of the Ziegfeld Follies from 1915 to 1921, made his last film, Sensations of 1945, in 1944. Nobody contributed more wry quotations ("Anyone who hates children and animals can't be all bad.") to American folklore. Jimmy Starr (1904-1990) was an American screenwriter and Hollywood columnist. Curiously, IMDB identifies Starr's two wives as Evelyn and Cherie. No Julie. The database might be in error, but Fields might also be confused. Lightly creased. Torn at edges. One horizontal and one vertical fold. Ink stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
