W.C. FIELDS
The Hollywood comedian accepts invitation from U.S. Vice President Henry A. Wallace to visit him next time he is back East, signs name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "W.C. Fields" in black ink. 1 page, 8x10. Written on personal letterhead featuring embossed white facsimile signature in top left corner. June 10, 1943. Hollywood, California. Addressed to Mr. Edwin A. Halsey, Secretary at the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C. In full: "I am in receipt of your letter of June 5th. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to call on you and Mr. Wallace, our Vice-President, if a meeting can be arranged. It is my intention to come East in October or November and I shall take advantage of your kind invitation. My sincerest good wishes to you and Mr. Wallace, Sincerely". Red-nosed, gravel-voiced, bottle-hitting American comedian W.C. Fields (1880-1946), born William Claude Dukenfield, began his film career in silents. He later excelled in such films as David Copperfield (as Micawber), My Little Chickadee (with Mae West) and The Bank Dick. The vaudeville veteran, who appeared in every version of the Ziegfeld Follies from 1915 to 1921, made his last film, Sensations of 1945, in 1944. Nobody contributed more wry quotations ("Anyone who hates children and animals can't be all bad.") to American folklore. Normal mailing folds. Creased throughout. Slightly soiled. Thin and fragile. Ink from signature bleeding slightly. Otherwise, fine condition.
