W. HARRISON AINSWORTH
Envelope mailed one year before his death, hand addressed to the
director of an "idiot asylum"
Autograph Envelope signed: "To/Dr. Grabham/Earlswood Asylum/Red
Hill/ W. Harrison Ainsworth", 5x4. Postmarked Reigate (England),
January 5, 1881. W. Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) the publisher
of Ainsworth's Magazine (1842-1853), is best known for his
popular historical romances, including Tower of London, Guy
Fawkes, Lancashire Witches and Boscobel, several of which were
illustrated by George Cruikshank. His novels resembled in style and
content those of Sir Walter Scott. Dr. George Grabham was the medical
superintendent of the Royal Earlswood Asylum for Idiots (Redhill, Surry)
from 1870-1882. Despite the name, this charitably funded institution was one of
the first to address seriously and sympathetically the needs of the learning
disabled. Ainsworth died in Reigate January 3, 1882, almost a year to the day
after addressing this letter. Toned and worn. Edge frayed and worn. Signature in
fine condition.
