Conclusion of Autograph Letter signed: W. Harrison Ainsworth",
1p, 4½x3¾. Kensal Lodge, Harrow Road, [London], 1840 June 17. In
full: "On my return from Berkshire yesterday I found your letter, and in
reply to it beg to enclose a draft [not included] for the amount of my
subscription (five guineas.) to the Drury Lane Theatrical Fund. I remain, Sir,
your very obedient servant. " The publisher of "Ainsworth's Magazine"
(1842-1853), AINSWORTH (1805-1882) is best known for his popular
historical romances, including Tower of London, Guy Fawkes,
Lancashire Witches and Boscobel, several illustrated by George
Cruikshank. His novels, though less well remembered today, resembled those of
Sir Walter Scott. At Kensal House, he entertained leading literary figures of
his day, Charles Dickens included. Irregularly cut. Mounting adhesive on verso
shows through around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
