W. T. GRANT
On his company letterhead, Grant complies with an autograph request.
Typed Letter signed: "W. T. Grant", 1 page, 8½x11. New York, N.Y., 1963 May 23. On letterhead of the W. T. Grand Company to Peter V. Shikes, Merchantville, New Jersey. In full: "In response to your letter of May 8, I am happy to sign my name to this letter for your autograph collection. Very truly yours". William T. Grant (1876-1972), who opened his first store in 1906 in Lynn, Massachusetts, remained active in the retail business for 60 years. Grant advocated making a fair profit and no more. Unlike many businesses, Grant's stores, which sold needed items at inexpensive prices, prospered during the Depression. In 1936, Grant established the W.T. Grant Foundation, a philanthropic organization that is still in operation today. The W.T. Grant chain, however, closed its doors in 1974, two years after the death of its founder. Multiple mailing folds. Adhesive residue at center. Corners creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
