W. WILLARD WIRTZ
W. Willard Wirtz signed and dated this album leaf in Salem, Oregon in
1965. With a small b/w photo of Wirtz affixed. He was Secretary of Labor under
Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Album leaf signed "W. Willard Wirtz/Salem, Oregon/December 2,
1965.". Blue ink notations in bottom left corner and on verso, both in
unknown hand. 6¾x9¼ album leaf, rounded right corners. B/w printed photograph of
Wirtz (5¼x4½ overall, 2¾x3¼ image) affixed. Wirtz (1912-2010) served as
Secretary of Labor under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B.
Johnson (1962-1969). Favoring collective bargaining rather than government
intervention in labor-management disputes, Wirtz also promoted research for
identifying labor shortages and led LBJ's "War on Poverty". He also
implemented Department of Labor anti-discrimination regulatory
responsibilities under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Lightly toned
and creased. Show-through from paper loss and mounting remnants on verso touches
signature. Show-through from notations on verso (does not touch signature).
Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Photo was folded once and unfolded.
