WAITE HOYT. Typed Letter signed: "Waite", 1p, 6½x10¼. Cincinnati, Ohio, 1977 July 7. To Jack. In part: "...I may not go to old timers day. I haven't made up my mind. I have quite some relatives in Westport, Conn, and Princeton, N.J. - and both elements expect me to spend some time with them - all this plus the Yankees too - and an inner voice say[s] 'Don't do it - it's too much.' Ogle I don't know - but I assure you the going back is not all it's cracked up to be. They fuss to the extreme over that (great) Mantle - or at least I should say that - but you'd think Mantle and Di Maggio were the only Yankees ever on that club - and the remains of the '27 club are hardly recognize[d]. So, I probably will not go. I'm not sure yet. Please accept this in good spirit - the way it is written - and good luck, and thank you for all and everything - I hope the future heals the wounds...." WaiteHoyt (1899-1984) was a mainstay on the pitching staff of the great Yankee teams of the 1920s. In 1927, the year Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs, he was 22-7, led the AL in wins, ERA (2.63) and winning percentage (.759). Hoyt was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. Mounting remnants show through, not at signature. Stray ink marks in blank lower margin.
