WALT HORAN
The Washington Congressman, who served for 22 years, signs his name in black ink
Clipped Signature: "Walt Horan". 4¼x1½. Walter Franklin "Walt" Horan (1898-1966) was an American politician and Congressman who served the state of Washington for 22 years. In the U.S. House Of Representatives he represented Washington's 5th district from 1943 to 1965. Born to a family of fruit growers, Horan served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate in World War I, and later received a degree from Washington State College in 1925. He ran for congress in 1942 with the primary intent to improve Washington's agricultural sector. His victory over Clarence Dill was the first Republican win in the district in 20 years. On the night of the 1964 election when he was running against 35-year old lawyer Tom Foley, Horan suffered acute pulmonary edema. Foley went to defeat Horan, whose failing health had been known to the public for nearly a year (having been treated 10 months earlier for a similar attack). Two years out of office, Horan suffered a fatal heart attack while travelling the Philippines. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
