WALTER ABEL
Small piece of green paper signed "best wishes" and affixed to
an index card
Autograph Note signed "To Ralph/best wishes/Walter Abel". With
"Abel, Walter/Feb. 22 '39/'Off to Buffalo'" in blue ink in unknown hand
on card and notations in blue ink on verso in unknown hand. 2½x1¾ signature
affixed to 4¾x2¾ card. Abel (1898-1987, born in St. Paul, Minnesota) was
an American actor with over 80 TV shows and films and over 40 Broadway
appearances to his credit between 1918 and 1985. Abel made his name playing
well-groomed but barely restrained professional man, mostly in top supporting
roles, and his dignity lent well to his appearances in Eugene O'Neill's plays.
Among his notable screen appearances were as D'Artagnan in The Three
Musketeers (1935), the newspaper editor in Arise My Love (1940),
as Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire's hapless agent in Holiday Inn (1942) and
Charles Calvin, a philanthropist who falls off a skyscraper to his death, in
Mirage (1966). Lightly toned. Signature has irregular edges and has a
small stain in upper left corner, which touches signature. Card is lightly
creased and bowed and has rounded edges. Otherwise in fine
condition.
