Pitkin signed this letter, typed on his personalized stationery from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and discussing his early writing career, on Balboa Island, California in 1947. Pitkin wrote The Psychology of Happiness, Life Begins at 40 and A Short Introduction to the History of Human Stupidity.
Typed letter signed "Walter B. Pitkin" in purple ink.1 page, 8¼x10¾, on Pitkin's personalized stationery from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. Comes in a paper folder bound with two staples, titled on front: "WATLER B. PITKIN/TLS dated 1947". Balboa Island, California, March 8, 1947. Addressed to Mr. Lester Roberts, San Francisco, California. In full: "Dear Mr. Roberts: The Art and Business of the Short Story (Macmillan, 1913) was my first book. In the same year I was the editor and contributor to a philosophical study entitled The New Realism, also published by Macmillan. Between 1905 and 1913, I wrote nearly a hundred short stored for all sorts of magazines, but I assume that this does not interest you. Sincerely, Walter B. Pitkin". American philosopher and author Pitkin (1878-1953) was a psychology and philosophy lecturer (1905-1909) a professor of journalism (1912-1943) at Columbia University, but is probably best remembered for publishing a series of self-help books, including The Psychology of Happiness(1929) and Life Begins at 40(1932). He also wrote A Short Introduction to the History of Human Stupidity(1932), which was translated into 15 languages. Lightly toned and creased. Random ink stains. Folder covers are separating from staples, which are rusting. Otherwise in fine condition.
