WALTER BURTON HARRIS
Very rare signature from The Times Moroccan correspondent, signing "Yrs. Sincerely". Also signing is vaudeville performer Nora de Vos
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yrs sincerely/Walter B. Harris", "Nora de Vos", and two unidentified signers, 8¼x6½. Accompanied by an unsigned postcard picturing Harris' house, "La Villa Harris". Walter B. Harris (1866-1933) was a journalist, socialite, and explorer who was famous for his writings on Morocco, where he lived for much of his life. Settling in Morocco at the age of 19, Harris had an easy time integrating into the life of the country, being able to speak French, Spanish and Moroccan Arabic and bearing a resemblance to the people of Morocco, which allowed him to travel in a country that was then off limits to outsiders. Soon after arriving in the country, Harris began writing for The Times on his travels, which was a popular topic due to the conflict between Morocco and European powers. Throughout the years he would support the country through several conflicts, acting often as a correspondent, and particularly sought to aid the country in seeking its independence. He was eventually well regarded by the Moroccan people, and was awarded the Légion d'honneur by France for his assistance in the relations between both countries. Nora de Vos Merits further research. Heavily toned. Surface creases. Left edge notched and frayed. Corners creased. Ink notes (unknown hand). Tape and adhesive residue on both sides of sheet. Otherwise, fine condition.
