WALTER C. ALVAREZ. TLS: "Walter C. Alvarez", 1p, 6¼x9¼. No
place, 1956 November 3. On sheet imprinted "Dr. Walter C. Alvarez" to
Leon Gutterman, President and Publisher, WISDON Magazine, Beverly Hills,
California. In full: "Many many thanks for the wonderful award.
I certainly find myself in remarkably good company. I know the least I could
do to show my appreciation would be to get out to California to receive the
award, but unfortunately my burdens here are so great that I don't dare attempt
going out December second. I certainly wish I could be with you.
Sincerely". Physician and author Walter Clement Alvarez (1884-1978) became
known as "America's Family Doctor" for his medical columns (beginning in
1950) and radio and television appearances. Alvarez, who also authored
several dozen books on medicine and wrote Forewords for many others, had
become a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota (Mayo
Foundation) in 1934. He was the son of Luis F. Alvarez, who developed
a better method of diagnosing diagmacular leprosy, and the brother of famed
California artist Mabel Alvarez. One of his sons, Luis Alvarez,
became a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. Lightly creased with folds, minor
diagonal crease at the second "a" of Alvarez. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at
upper right margin. Fine condition.
