WALTER CONNOLLY
Vintage photo, seated with arms crossed, inscribed in person to collector
Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Sincere good wishes/Walter
Connolly". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: March
16, 1935. Walter Connolly (1887-1940) was a versatile actor of
stage, silent film and talkies, appearing in twenty-two Broadway productions and
more than fifty films. He often played exasperated business tycoons, or the
father of the leading lady (as in It Happened One Night, 1934; and
Libeled Lady, 1936). He was a Mississippi con man to Mickey Rooney's
Huckleberry Finn (1939). His last film appearance was a starring one: the title
role in The Great Victor Herbert. He also played the title character
in The Adventures of Charlie Chan on NBC Radio from 1932 to 1938.
Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his
love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities.
While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars
with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Scattered
light creases and surface marks. Light rubbing of finish (for better signature
adhesion). Overall, fine condition.
