Walter E. Fauntroy". B/w, 8x10. Walter E. Fauntroy (b. 1933) was pastor at New Bethel
Baptist Church and a prominent civil rights activist. He met Martin Luther King Jr. while
attending Virginia Union University; the two became close friends. In 1971, Fauntroy
became the first congressman to represent Washington D.C. since 1875! The District of
Columbia received an at-large district from legislation passed by President Richard Nixon in
1970. He held the position until 1991. After he was accused of writing a bad check, he fled
the country and lived overseas for four years. He returned in 2016 to face his creditors. Light
crease at mid-right background. 3 file nicks at blank right margin. Mounting remnants on
verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
