Typed Letter signed: "Walter F. George" as US Senator, 1 page, 8x10½ page, affixed to an 8½x11 page. Vienna, George, 1945 August 4. On his letterhead as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee to Capt. Ralph Errington Ward, Washington, D.C. In full: "Permit me to acknowledge your letter of July 29th. I am pleased to enclose you may autograph for your collection. Sincerely yours". Attached on verso are a b/w newspaper photo of George, and a transmittal envelope bearing his stamped frank. WALTER FRANKLIN GEORGE (1878-1957), a Georgia Democrat, served in the US Senate from 1922 to 1957. Considered the Senate's best orator, he chaired at various times two powerful committees: Finance and Foreign Relations. President Eisenhower appointed him US Ambassador to NATO in 1957. From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned.
