Inscribed image of the Alabama Democrat
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Michael Robuck/With best wishes/Walter Flowers". B/w, 8x10. Walter Flowers (1933-1984) represented Alabama's 7th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives for 5 terms (1969-1979), retiring from politics when he lost a bid for the US Senate to Howell Heflin in the Democratic Primary of 1978. A member of the House Judiciary Committee, Flowers attributed the recurrence of his ulcer to his anguished deliberations on a Committee vote to impeach President Nixon in 1974. (He voted "yes" on two Articles.) George Wallace, whose Presidential campaign Flowers had managed in 1972, helped shield Flowers from adverse public reaction in Nixon-friendly Alabama. Toned. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Corners creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
