WALTER HAGEN

Apologizes for tardy response to a request. He's been busy writing his autobiography.

Typed Letter signed: "Walter Hagen", 1 page, 8½x11. Detroit Athletic Club, Detroit, Michigan, 1956 February 3. To James M. Wiggins, Albany, Georgia. In full: "Please forgive this belated answer to your most interesting letter. I have been so busy for the last several years writing my book 'The Walter Hagen Story' that I have had little time to answer the many requests which I receive. I am having some pictures made up and shall be happy to forward one to you as early as possible. I appreciate your interest and your good wishes for my well being. Sincerely yours". Walter Hagen (1892-1969) won  two U.S. Opens (1914, 1919), four British Opens (1922, 1924, 1928-1929), five PGA Championships (1921, 1924-1927) and five Western Opens. Only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have won more major tournaments. A six-time U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, he retired with 40 PGA wins. When Hagen began play, many golf clubs did not allow professionals to enter by the front door. Hagen significantly enhanced the status of golf pros, probably becoming the first to person to earn a million in any sport. Hagen is portrayed by Bruce McGill in the movie The Legend of Bagger Vance. Intersecting mailing folds and a touch of mild toning. Otherwise, fine condition.
