Letter to a friend, critiquing a chiropractor and mentioning an upcoming TV appearance. Accompanied by original hand addressed mailing envelope, signed by Hampden on the verso. Two Items.
Autograph Letter signed: "Walter Hampden", 2 pages (front and verso), 7x10½. New York, N. Y., 1950 August 31. On letterhead of The Players to "Dear Curt", in full: "I tried to reach you by phone this early afternoon before going to a long rehearsal, so I send you a line instead tonight to thank you for your very friendly note, and to tell you that Sanchelli then (namely the early twenties) pulled me through a really severe attack of influenza and enabled me to continue my season. I found him helpful more than once. He was then a chiropractor, and was recommended to me by my manager. I have not continued to call on him for several reasons. I really prefer osteopathic treatments. Also I have had no real reason to visit him. And lastly he butted him on me when I was laid up with a fractured heel and made himself a nuisance, as well as being completely out of his field and completely in error in the treatment he advocated. I think he calls himself 'Professor' because he is not allowed a regular practice. I can't vouch for that, and I don't want to do him a wrong, because I do feel grateful for the aid he administered to me. He is clever and experienced in his own field, and if you don't mind the extra roughness of the chiropractic treatment, which is short, sharp and hard, he should be well able to help you, and he is very near to your home. I've not been very well this past few months, but feel better now as you can surmise from my rehearsing for Ford TV for Sept. 8th, my old part in 'The Traitor'. I am always hoping to see you and to renew our friendship. I shall certainly try to do so. Hoping your 'sacro' will soon be back in place, and with best greetings. Yours. Walter Hampden (1879-1955) was a prominent American stage actor closely associated with the role of Cyrano de Bergerac, which he first performed in 1923. Hampden formed his own repertory company, was President of the Players' Club for 27 years, and appeared in supporting roles in several films, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) to The Vagabond King (1956).
