A manuscript letter from the actor regretfully declining an
invitation for a Friday breakfast
Manuscript letter signed: "Walter Hampden", in black ink,
5x6½. January 6, 1921. Boston, Massachusetts. Hotel Arlington. In full:
"My Dear Mrs. Fresche: I regret very much that I shall not be able to
accept your invitation to breakfast for Friday. I shall be very glad to have my
name down as a newcomer of the Millennium Guild. With thanks and best wishes.
Sincerely yours". Walter Hampden (1879-1955) was a prominent American
stage actor closely associated with the role of Cyrano de Bergerac, which he
first performed in 1923. Hampden formed his own repertory company, was
President of the Players' Club for 27 years, and appeared in supporting roles in
several films, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) to The Vagabond
King (1956). Normal mailing folds. Toned. Light surface creases. Slightly
