WALTER HINTON
Special cover flown by Hinton from Toledo to Memphis in 1930 and commemorating his flight across the Atlantic in 1919
Special Cover signed: "Walter Hinton", 6½x3½. Typed address to collector in Brooklyn, N.Y. in bottom right. 5-cent airmail stamp affixed, postmarked Emmett, Idaho, May 12, 1930. Printed cachet: "Exchange Club Service to Aviation Tour featuring Lieutenant Walter Hinton Pilot NC-4 1st Plane to Fly the Atlantic starting at Toledo Ohio Nov. 25, 1930 ending National Exchange Club Convention at Memphis Tenn". Noted on verso that on May 12, 1930, Hinton visited Emmett, Idaho. In May 1919, Hinton was the co-pilot of the U.S. Navy's NC-4, one of four Navy Curtiss flying boats built during World War I to provide patrol cover for American shipping in the Atlantic against German U-boats. The NC-4, with a crew of six, left Rockaway in Queens, N.Y. on May 8, 1919, reaching Portugal on May 27, 1919 in the first crossing of the Atlantic by air. In the 1920s, Hinton explored the Arctic by balloon, made the first flight from North to South America, and explored the Amazon by hydroplane. Yellowed, lightly creased and soiled. Overall, fine condition.
