WALTER DAMROSCH
Handwritten two page letter signed by the music director of the New York Symphony Orchestra
Autograph Letter signed: "Walter Damrosch", 2p, 4¼x6¾. On letterhead of Hotel Cambridge, New York. New York, N.Y., 1898 September 20. To "Dear Mr. Murphy". In full: "Thanks for the proofs and your very kind letter. I am delighted that you think well of the work. As the time is so precious you need not send me a second proof. I have looked them through as carefully as I could. But please send me proof of the title page and dedication as I may want to revise it. With best regards. Very sincerely Yrs. [signature] P.S. The proofs leave by Express tomorrow morning." Damrosch (1862-1950) was the son of early Metropolitan Opera conductor Leopold Damrosch. Emigrating from Germany in 1871, Damrosch became music director of New York's Oratorio Society and Symphony Orchestra. He composed operas of his own (Cyrano, 1913; The Man Without a Country (1937) and championed young American composers like George Gershwin and Aaron Copland. Damrosch wrote an autobiography, My Musical Life, but this correspondence must refer instead to one of his compositions, since My Musical Life was not published until 1926. Mounting tape remnants on page 2 verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
