Autograph Letter signed: "Walter Damrosch", 1 page, 7¼x6½, affixed to an 8½x11 page, with a newspaper obituary about Damrosch affixed above (3 surfaces). On "168 East 71st Street" letterhead, No Place, 1945 November 26. To Ralph Errington Ward. In full: "Cordial greetings to my brother musician Ralph Errington Ward from" Accompanied by a 7¾x9½ black and white photograph of Damrosch reading music, affixed to a separate 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). Walter Damrosch (1862-1950) was the son of early Metropolitan Opera conductor Leopold Damrosch. Emigrating from Germany in 1871, Damrosch became music director of New York's Oratorio Society and Symphony Orchestra. He composed operas of his own (Cyrano, 1913; The Man Without a Country (1937) and championed young American composers like George Gershwin and Aaron Copland. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Adhesive on verso (affixing letter to the page). Lightly soiled. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. Two items.
