Memorandum signed: "Walter J. Hickel" as Secretary of the Interior, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1969 April 4. On official letterhead to the Secretary of Commerce [Maurice Stans]. In full: "In reply to your memorandum of March 28, I have designated Mr. Harry Shooshan, Under Secretary for Programs, to represent the Department on an interim basis on the Inter-Agency Committee for Minority Enterprise. Among his other responsibilities, Mr. Shooshan is responsible for Equal Opportunity programs in the Department of the Interior. Mr. Shooshan is located in Room 7259 and can be reached on Code 183, Extension 33101. " Hickel (1919-2010), a native of Kansas, moved to Alaska in 1940 and led the fight for Alaskan statehood. He served as Governor of Alaska (Republican, 1966-1969; Alaskan Independence Party, 1990-1994). Hickel, a World War II veteran who served on the Republican National Committee from Alaska Territory (1954-1959) and the Republican National Committee from Alaska (1960-1964), also established a construction company that grew into a multi-million dollar business. A strong environmentalist, he was U. S. Secretary of the Interior under President Richard M. Nixon (1969-1970), but was forced to resign after making critical statements about Nixon's hostility to anti-war demonstrators.Staple holes at top left corner. Lightly creased.
